Key takeaways
- Choose a sector by matching your trade, appointments and interests, not only your rank.
- Register with official channels early: DGR, your Service's placement organisation, and your Zila or Rajya Sainik Board.
- Use the free National Career Service portal and its Jobs for Ex-Servicemen filter alongside private job sites.
- Treat any agency that asks you to pay for a job with suspicion; official channels warn against it.
What jobs can ex-servicemen do after retirement?
Ex-servicemen often move into eight areas. These are security and facility management, logistics and supply chain, operations, training, HR and administration, technical maintenance, Government and PSU re-employment, and running a business. The right one depends on your trade, the appointments you held and how you want to work. Technical tradesmen often become maintenance staff and technicians. Supply and clerical staff often move into stores, logistics and office work. NCOs and JCOs who supervised for years often become security, facility or shift supervisors. Officers often move into operations, administration, training and management. Government and PSU posts suit those who meet the rules in each notification. To find openings, register with the Directorate General Resettlement (DGR) and your Zila Sainik Board. If you served in the Army, also register with the Army Welfare Placement Organisation (AWPO). Search the free National Career Service portal with its Jobs for Ex-Servicemen filter. Go to DGR job fairs, and build a LinkedIn profile.
Sectors, roles and who they commonly suit
Use the table below as a starting map, not a rule. The rank bands show where people most often fit, but plenty succeed outside them. Before you decide, read ten real postings for the role in your city. Check which requirements you can already prove.
| Sector | Typical roles | Rank bands that commonly fit | First step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Security and facility management | Security supervisor, security officer, facility supervisor, facility manager | OR and JCOs for supervisor roles; officers for manager roles | Read postings from facility-services firms; list team sizes and incidents handled |
| Logistics and supply chain | Storekeeper, inventory controller, warehouse supervisor, fleet or transport coordinator | Supply, clerical and transport trades; JCOs; logistics-experienced officers | Learn the employer's inventory or warehouse terms and add them truthfully to your résumé |
| Operations | Shift supervisor, operations executive, operations manager | Senior NCOs and JCOs for shift roles; officers for manager roles | Write scope lines: people, sites, schedules and results |
| Training and instruction | Trainer, safety trainer, instructor, learning and development roles | Instructors of any rank; officers from training establishments | List courses taught, trainee numbers and assessments |
| HR and administration | Office administrator, admin executive, HR executive, admin manager | Clerical trades; JCOs; officers from personnel and admin appointments | Map your records, rosters and welfare work to HR and admin tasks |
| Technical maintenance | Electrician, maintenance technician, telecom or radio technician, workshop supervisor | Technical trades from Sepoy to Subedar Major and equivalents | Look up your trade in the Equation of Trades directory; add any required civilian licence |
| Government and PSU re-employment | Posts notified with ex-servicemen eligibility | All ranks, subject to each notification | Read each notification fully and prepare the exact documents it lists |
| Entrepreneurship | Running a business, including DGR-listed self-employment schemes | All ranks, subject to each scheme's eligibility | Read the scheme page on the DGR site and confirm eligibility before investing |
Directorate General Resettlement (DGR)
DGR is an inter-service agency under the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare, Ministry of Defence. The Department says DGR does three main things. It runs resettlement training before and after retirement at institutes such as IIMs, IITs and NIELIT. It works to place ex-servicemen in Central and State Government departments, PSUs and private companies. It also runs business and self-employment schemes. DGR works through five regional Directorate Resettlement Zones.
On the DGR website you can register, with separate paths for officers and for JCOs/OR. You can see vacancy notices under Job Assistance and find course calendars for officers and for JCOs/OR. You can also read about schemes such as the Security Agency scheme, Coal Loading and Transportation, Management of CNG Stations and Retail Outlet Dealership. Who can apply differs by scheme and rank. Read each page and its guidelines before you apply.
DGR job fairs
DGR posts a schedule of job fairs on its website. It has separate sign-up links for officers, for JCOs/ORs and for recruiters. Sign-up for listed fairs runs through esmhire.com. Dates and venues are marked tentative, so check the DGR site before you travel. Carry several printed copies of a résumé suited to the employers attending. Be ready to explain your experience in two minutes.
Next step
AWPO and Sainik Boards
The Army Welfare Placement Organisation (AWPO) runs its placement portal at exarmynaukri.com. AWPO works under the Directorate of Indian Army Veterans. Veterans can register, and so can the widows, wards and dependents of Army personnel. Employers can register to recruit. Listings are grouped for officers, for JCOs/ORs and for widows and wards. The portal warns users not to pay money to any agency for a job. Navy and Air Force personnel should ask their own Service's resettlement and placement cells about similar support.
Kendriya, Rajya and Zila Sainik Boards look after ex-servicemen welfare at national, state and district level. The Kendriya Sainik Board says Zila Sainik Welfare Offices work with local Central, State and private employers to re-employ ex-servicemen. They also work with the local employment exchange. For those starting their own venture, they help prepare project reports and get loans under DGR resettlement schemes. Job registration steps vary by state. Contact the Zila Sainik Board or Sainik Welfare office where you plan to settle. DGR's guidelines also explain how Rajya and Zila Sainik Boards sponsor ex-servicemen against vacancies.
National Career Service (NCS) portal
NCS is the Government of India's job portal, run by the Ministry of Labour and Employment. You can search jobs in India, filter for jobs for ex-servicemen, find job fairs and use career-guidance tools. NCS says it charges no fee at any stage of registration, application or interview. DGR's job-assistance page also points ex-servicemen to NCS and its Jobs for Ex-Servicemen option.
- Register once and complete your profile with the same civilian job titles you use on your résumé.
- Use the Jobs for Ex-Servicemen filter, then narrow by location and role.
- Save searches for your target role and check them weekly.
Job fairs, LinkedIn and your own network
Many civilian jobs are filled through referrals. Build a LinkedIn profile with a headline that names your target role, not your rank. Reuse your résumé summary in the About section. Connect with former colleagues who already work in your target sector. Ask them for short talks about how they got in and what employers look for.
Use all the channels together. Register with the official ones, search NCS and private job sites, go to job fairs and work your network every week. Track every application so you can follow up.
